Voight isn’t the only one whose child is murdered by a ruthless killer. Olinsky’s daughter, Lexi, dies due to a warehouse fire set by arsonist and murderer Dylan Oates. Voight interrogates Oates to get a confession out of him and to figure out why he targeted a warehouse party to set on fire. Hank attempts to scare Oates by asking him who broke his heart to make him commit such a heinous crime. However, the killer doesn’t budge, even after the sergeant slaps Oates and pulls a knife at his neck.
Oates is one of the few remorseless killers who isn’t phased by Voight’s scary tactics. This places the Sergeant in a tough spot because when Olinsky asks to be alone with his daughter’s killer, Hank refuses to give him the keys to the cage. Olinsky pushes his argument further by reminding Voight of what he did to get vengeance for Justin. Voight understands Olinsky’s intention to avenge his daughter, but he’s also thinking about the families of the other victims of the warehouse fire who want the murderer to pay for his crimes.

After Antonio is shot and nearly killed by drug lord Adres Diaz aka Pulpo, Voight and his unit track him down. When Pulpo is found, Voight and Olinsky intend to kill the criminal by placing chains around his neck connected to cement blocks and dropping him into a lake. However, Diaz’s demise is cut short thanks toJay Halstead inChicago P.D., who disagrees with this plan and convinces Olinsky to side with him and place Pulpo in custody.

When torturing a suspect, Voight not only uses violence, but he also gives them a taste of their own medicine. For example, during his interrogation of rapist and kidnapper Trevor Dunne in the cage, Hank takes out a crowbar that Trevor used to torture women to instill fear in him. In this case, it worked, making Trevor sweat, scream, and fear for his life.
The beginning of this interrogation is also eerie because Trevor initially thinks that Voight is a medic when he’s putting on black gloves. However, when he looks at Hank and sees him take out the crowbar from a bag, he realizes that he’s in for a reckoning. Voight also taunts the rapist by telling him he’s used to actual physical violence(hence the name of the episode) and uses his weapon against him to retrieve information on Steve Ulrich (the leader of a human trafficking ring).
