Black Myth: Wukonghas no shortage of memorable challenges, but some encounters that were considered for the game didn’t ultimately make the cut. Whether looking at direct explanations from the developers at GameScience or alleged leaks of the original plot, there’sa lot of material missing from the final product to speculate about.

In some cases, cool content that didn’t end up appearing wouldn’t have worked well in the base game, at least not without introducing problems of its own. Future DLC for the game, however, could be the perfect opportunity to revisit interesting ideas and figure out ways to incorporate them. Based on classical Chinese novelJourney to the West, Black Myth: Wukonghas no shortage of ideas to draw on, and many great characters and locations fromJourney to the Westappear to have been among the originally planned content.

10Golden Horn & Silver Horn Are Memorable Foes

According to a collection of leaks and information regarding scrapped ideas thatExaminationAsleep122posted to Reddit, one large map that didn’t make the cut is Pingding Mountain, which was set to feature a final boss fight with Golden Horn and Silver Horn. InJourney to the West, these two demons attempt to capture Wukong with the help of two treasures in their possession, a gourd and a jade vase that both have the power to liquify whatever is sealed inside.

Scrapped Black Myth: Wukong Ideas Could Be Great Content For Future DLC

Cut content certainly didn’t ruin Black Myth: Wukong, but some cool concepts that didn’t work out could find second life in an expansion for the game.

In the end, of course, Wukong outwits them, sealing them inside and leaving them to their fate. Although the implication is that they wouldn’t last long, it’s never confirmed that they didn’t somehow manage to escape, so having them inBlack Myth: Wukongwould be justifiable.DLC could explain their escape and have the Destined One face off against these malicious foesto destroy them once and for all.

9The Ginseng Fruit Tree Provides A Moral Choice

Although theDestined One tends to stick to the taskat hand inBlack Myth: Wukong, Wukong himself was much more prone to getting into trouble. One such example was the encounter with the Taoist immortal Zhen Yuan, who lives in a temple with a Ginseng Fruit Tree that grants thousands of years of life for eating one fruit. Although Wukong already has immortality from plenty of past escapades, he steals a few fruits from the tree and shares them with his companions.

The leaked plans forBlack Myth: Wukonginclude an encounter with Zhenyuan Daxian and a mention of the fruit affecting the story, sothere might have been a moral choice involving stealing from the tree. It makes sense that this isn’t in the final version of the game, but putting more of a focus on choices in DLC could be a cool addition toBlack Myth: Wukong.

8The Bull King Could Have Been A Boss

Chapter Five ofBlack Myth: Wukonginvolves the Bull King and his family — Princess Iron Fan, Red Boy, and Pingping. The chapter’s final boss is Red Boy, who gains power after consuming one of Wukong’s relics, while the Bull King ultimately doesn’t lift a finger against the Destined One.

According to the leaked plot, the Bull King himself was originally slated to be a boss, which might have been an even more intense challenge than Red Boy. InJourney to the West, the Bull King was one of the few characters of comparable power to Wukong, featuring his own rich set of transformations. Even the old and tired version of the character that appears in the game would likely be more powerful than most of the bosses if he could rouse himself to action.

7The White Bone Demon Would Add DLC Romance

Although the White Bone Demon dies in the originalJourney to the West, this foe is nonetheless mentioned in the alleged early story treatment. In the original text, Wukong attempts to kill her repeatedly before finally succeeding, but the monk he travels with thinks he has killed innocent civilians instead and temporarily banishes him. She’s quite good at escaping death and leaving false remains behind, so it’s possible that the story was going to take the angle that her ultimate demise was yet another instance of trickery.

Black Myth: Wukong - All Secret Area Locations & How To Enter Them (All Chapters)

Each Chapter of Black Myth: Wukong has at least one secret area you can enter to face new enemies and gain rare items for your ongoing journey.

Apparently, the White Bone Demon’sBlack Myth: Wukongappearance would have involved a romantic subplot. In this case, that might have involved the Destined One rather than Bajie, as the old monkey who appears before the end mentions a love between the White Bone Demon and Wukong despite the original text not implying any romantic connection. In DLC, it would be fairly easy to fit the White Bone Demon into any number of situations.

6More Transformations Would Be Fun

The Destined One has no shortage oftransformations inBlack Myth: Wukong’s combat, but outside of battle, he doesn’t switch up his appearance as often as Wukong did inJourney to the West. One cut concept would have seen the Destined One transform into a spider himself when escaping the spider swarm in Chapter Four, leading to a more involved sequence.

Ultimately, this scene was cut because it wasn’t as exciting as the team hoped, so it might be a good thing it wasn’t in the game. There’s no reason that DLC couldn’t go back to the drawing board for more transformation sequences outside of combat, however. Whether that would be a reworked spider sequence or a different concept altogether, there are endless creative options when it comes to transformations.

5The Land of Women Almost Appeared

Journey to the Westis full of absurd happenings, butone of the wildest is when the group ends up in the Land of Women, where no men live. Here, Zhu Bajie and the monk that the group is escorting to the west drink water that impregnates them, forcing the party to gain access to the waters of Abortion Spring before moving on.

Every Missable Boss Fight In Black Myth: Wukong & What Triggers It

Black Myth: Wukong has a lot of optional boss fights, some of which, and their rewards, are missable if players don’t follow the right steps.

Apparently, this was intended to be a small map inBlack Myth: Wukong, featuring the guardian of Abortion Spring, Ruyi, as well as other figures. It’s noted that the characters have turned into monsters, so unlike the White Bone Demon scenario, there wasn’t intended to be any romantic subplot here.

4Lion Camel Ridge Should Be Revisited

Three major foes fromJourney to the Westthat don’t appear in the final version ofBlack Myth: Wukongare the Azure Lion Demon, Yellow-Toothed Elephant Demon, and the Golden-Winged Great Peng. They occupy an area called Lion Camel Ridge that appears in the leaked original plot, which would have been the last chapter before the climax of the game.

These three are ultimately referenced inBlack Myth: Wukong’s prologue, but they don’t end up with their own boss fights in the game.Lion Camel Ridge could be a great new area for the Destined One to explore, and it’s original position near the end of the game would make it easy to potentially adapt for high-level adventure.

3Nezha Could Be A Great DLC Character

One memorableJourney to the Westcharacter who didn’t exactly make it into the game is Nezha, one of the sons of the Jade Emperor who fights Sun Wukong during the Monkey King’s rebellious days. Although he isn’t as effective at going head-to-head with Sun Wukong’s enormous power as Erlang Shen is, he’s still a capable fighter who shows up more than once throughout the story.

After unlocking Black Myth: Wukong’s secret ending, you’ll have to face six unique bosses in three fights to change the Destined One’s fate.

Despite being mentioned in the alleged leaks of the original story treatment,Nezha only shows up inBlack Myth: Wukong’s animations rather than making it into the gameplay.Nezha could appear in DLCas a powerful rival, friend, or even playable character. It’s understandable that he didn’t get the full Erlang Shen treatment in the game, but it would be nice to see him make some kind of appearance.

2The Quest To Seek Scriptures Should Show Up

Although the Destined One’s goal inBlack Myth: Wukongis simply to bring back Wukong, Wukong’s original task inJourney to the Westwas to help a monk retrieve scriptures from India. The description of the original final chapter mentions a “journey to seek scriptures,” tying the Destined One’s quest more closely to his predecessors.

This could have manifested in any number of ways, but regardless of the implementation, it might have helped to provide more structure to the ultimately loose final chapter.Tacking on a quest to recover scriptures could give the Destined One a new objective inBlack Myth: WukongDLCthat would bring him closer to the accomplishments of the Monkey King.

1Large-Scale Battles Would Escalate DLC

The most infamous piece of cut content inBlack Myth: Wukongis likely the giant battle between Wukong and celestial soldiers, which was originally intended to appear in the prologue of the game. As a huge, memorable set piece, it could have been an iconic way to kick things off. In practice, however, the team couldn’t figure out how to make it fun or keep the performance stable, so it didn’t make the cut.

Although sticking to the original plans clearly wouldn’t work out in DLC either, it would be nice to see GameScience find a way to make a large-scale battle work. This could also include the appearance of Nezha along with other powerful fighters, making for aBlack Myth: Wukongshowdown unlike any seen so far.
